BARCODE VERIFIERS
Improve supply chain efficiency, customer satisfaction, and industry compliance
Reduce lost productivity, shipping returns, costly chargebacks and fines
Barcode Verifiers are testing and grading instruments to assure your printed 1D and 2D barcode quality is 100% compliant to your symbology as set out by ANSI and ISO specifications. 1D and 2D barcode verifiers will grade barcodes for all printing methods including Direct Thermal, Thermal Transfer, Inkjet, Flexographic, and Direct Part Mark (DPM) – etched or dot-peened. Save your business time and money by reducing errors and chargebacks. Contact us for a consultation.
Our applications personnel have been applying barcode verifiers since their inception in the 1990’s. and have the experience to assure your success in the selection of the correct verifier for your application.
Send us your barcode labels for quality evaluation.
Why verify barcodes?
Simply put, good verification will assure the barcode will be readable by all parties in the supply chain, facilitating speedy, accurate inventories and movement of goods from manufacturer to wholesaler to retailer and user.
Poor quality barcodes can result in lost productivity, shipping returns, and costly fines. Ensuring your printed barcodes meet compliance standards will give you confidence they will be accepted anywhere, by any scanner.
Verification Parameters
Barcode verifiers analyze a barcode and measure against seven parameters. These parameters are:
Symbol Contrast
This refers to the difference between the darkest and the lightest modules
Minimum Reflectance
Measures whether the bars are dark enough to meet the required ratio of light that is reflected off of the spaces
Edge Contrast Minimum
Checks to ensure the contrast between adjacent bars and spaces is high enough
Modulation
Measures the black and white contrast throughout the barcode
Defects
Identifies the presence of white marks in the black bars, or black marks in the white spaces
Decodability
Refers to the accuracy of bar and space widths compared to their ideal size
Decode
Determines if the barcode can be read based on the requirements of the symbology
Grading Barcodes
The results from the parameter tests are used to give a barcode a final grade, which runs from 4.0 down to 0. 4.0 is the best result, 1.5 is the pass grade for most barcodes, 0.5 is allowed for outer case barcodes printed onto brown corrugate, and 0 is a fail. The American ANSI standard was developed using alphabetic grading running from A to D, then F, so a pass grade of 1.5 or C is often required.

Several considerations will determine the selection of a verifiers. These include:
- Barcode symbology
- Type of barcode is being verified
- Method of printing the barcode image
- Maximum size of the barcode
- Specification conformance
- X-Dimension or minimum element size
- Portability of the verifier
- Software features and reporting capabilities
