A frequent question. My laser barcode scanner does not read the barcode on my driver’s license. Whats wrong?

So a laser barcode scanner is a single line beam rasterizing device. The driver’s license barcode is one of a family of codes that contain information in more than 1 axis, generally called a 2D code. Other 2D codes include Data matrix, QR, and Aztec code symbologies. Readers for these codes utilize “area imaging” technology. The scanner actually takes a picture, captures the image and algorithmically process the captured image to decode the barcode.

These are a distinctly different class of scanners which inherently feature omnidirectional reading. No requirement to align the codes before pulling the scanner trigger; In the case of the driver’s license code, PDF417, there are 200+ characters embedded in the barcode and there can be resident software routines to parse the data fields for entry into an application.
